High School

Earvin Johnson Jr. was born on August 14, 1959 in Lansing, Michigan where he grew up with 6 sisters and 3 brothers. He went to Everett High School located on the southern side of Lansing where he would eventually win a state title with a 27-1 record his senior year. Johnson would go onto be a McDonald's All-American. When he was just 15 years old, he recorded his first triple-double with 36 points, 16 rebounds, and 16 assists. After this game Earvin Johnson was dubbed "Magic" by Fred Stably, Jr., sportswriter for the Lansing State Journal and it stuck throughout his entire basketball career.

 

 

 

 

College

After 2 years at Michigan State University, Magic entered the 1979 NBA Draft where he was the first overall pick in the draft by the Los Angeles Lakers where he would play his whole career in the NBA. This is where he would become one of the greatest NBA players of all-time. Johnson was very difficult to guard because of his size as a point guard. At 6ft 9in and 255 lbs, Magic was the tallest point guard in NBA history. Johnson would become a 5-time NBA champion and 3-time Finals MVP in 13 years with the Lakers.
