Learn about the early history of Germany up to recent years.
Germany has a long history starting as Germanic tribes from 750 BCE to 768 CE. The area outside of the Roman Empire that Julius Caesar had considered as an unconquered land East of the Rhine was called Germania. Through 962 in the Holy Roman Empire, the medieval German state, and in the 19th century Berlin grew in power. By 1900 Germany’s economy matched Britain’s, and Germany led the Central powers in WWI. In the 1930’s Germany was hit hard by the Great Depression and allowed Adolf Hitler to take power and lead the Nazis through WWII. In 1989 the Berlin Wall was destroyed, and later in 1990 East and West Germany reunited. In 2010 Germany played a critical role in resolving the growing Euro crisis.
