While Nintendo has a vast amount of series and titles, two of Nintendo’s most popular characters are Mario and Link.
Mario first appeared in 1981 as Jumpman in Donkey Kong and has since been a staple of video games. Since his first appearance, he has starred in 116 distinct titles and the Mario franchise is best-selling video game franchise in history. Most people who don't know much about video games know who Mario is, according to a 1990 poll that showed that more kids knew who Mario was then knew Mickey Mouse.
Link’s first appearance was in 1986 in The Legend of Zelda. Link has starred in numerous games and the series has sold 67 million copies. Despite the series title The Legend of Zelda, the main character's name is not Zelda, it is in fact Link, which is an agitative fact to fans of the series.
