Brian Burton and James Mercer first met each other at the Roskilde Festival in 2004. By 2008, they started recording in Burton's Los Angeles studio in secret and later announced their project on September 29, 2009. Their first album, self-titled, was released on March 9, 2010 in the United States and Canada. It has sold over 400,000 copies. In 2011 they released Elysian Fields, an Extended Play album with 4 songs. On October 8, 2013, Broken Bells announced another album, and After the Disco was released on February 4, 2014.
