ButterflierButterfly is the newest stroke.It was first in the Olympics in 1956. It originated from breaststroke when people started using an above water arm recovery. It is the first stroke in the individual medley (IM) and third in the medley relay. Butterfly events range from 50 to 200 yards or meters. Many consider it the most difficult stroke. Butterfly is a short axis stroke. This means that the rotation occurs across the waist. Butterfly consists of simultaneous arm swings and kicks with both feet together.  Spitz ButterflySome well-known butterfliers are Mary T. Meagher, Mark Spitz, and Michael Phelps.
