Swimming has been recorded since the Stone Age, but has been around even longer than that. Swimming became an organized sport near the early 1800s. At this time breaststroke was the most common stroke. In the late 1800s, Frederick Cavill saw native South Americans using a different technique. USA swimming logoThis eventually became known as the crawl. Ever since 1896, swimming has been included in the Olympics. Backstroke and butterfly were added in the 1904 and 1956 games, respectively.
