OlympicsSwimming has been in the Olympics since the first modern Olympic games in Athens in 1896. There are sixteen events in the Olympic program now with 100 and 200 meters for all strokes and also the 400 meter freestyle. Men also can compete in the 1500, while women compete in the 800 instead. In addition to individual events, there are 4x100 and 4x200 freestyle and 4x100 medley relays. For all individual events less than 400 meters, there are prelims, semi-finals, and finals. The finals consist of eight swimmers in one heat. For relays and distance events, the top eight seeds swim at finals and everyone else swims at prelims. In only these events, whoever has the fastest time, even if they are in prelims, wins.Phelps vs. Cavic
