History

Volleyball was referred to as "mintonette", before it was called volleyball. It was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan about 4 years after basketball originated. The game was designed to be a combination of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball. The first volleyball net that was borrowed from the game of tennis, was only 6'6", but keep in mind that the average person was shorter back then than they are now. The offensive style was intense in 1916 and it became obvious that they needed standard rules for tournament play. So the USVBA (United States Volleyball Association) was started in 1928.
